Abstract

The influence of the alkali pretreatment of cotton knitted fabrics before peroxide bleaching was investigated. It was found out that optimal results could be obtained by the NaOH-alkali treatment at 60 °C using a good emulsifier, a sequestrator and a degreasing agent. The obtained whiteness the of a medium quality knitted fabric is higher than with previous demineralization. Through the alkali treatment at higher temperatures greater damages of cotton are caused than through the alkali treatment at 60 °C, whereas a lower whiteness is achieved at lower treatment temperatures.
