Abstract

An overview of the designing and manufacturing of formal academic gowns of the University of Zagreb is given. The University of Zagreb boasts 330 years of history and tradition and is today, with 24 faculties, three art schools, four professional schools, the center of scientific, artistic and research activities in Croatia. The design and manufacturing of the models of formal academic gowns for the rector, vice rectors, faculty deans and the students encompass well known Croatian symbols, in the form of various designs of Croatian triple braided decorations, while the color and the making of the cuffs indicate the hierarchy of the honorable duties and positions of the University officials. The formal academic gown represents not only the University in Zagreb, but the Republic of Croatia as well, at all the manifestations and occasions where the rector and the other university and faculty officials are present, including in its design recognizable form and patterns, nobility, beauty and academic dignity.
