Fishing nets - types, properties and characterization

Abstract

As themes related to fishing nets have not been systematically dealt with in the framework of the recent scientific literature published in Croatia, the paper presents a summary of the topics based on the new law and normative provisions with an overview of the relevant scientific literature. Presented is a detailed review of the division of fishing nets by the method of fishing, the materials used to manufacture them (fibers and yarns) and ways of making fishing nets. By overviewing the standards related to the topic of research a review of basic terms related to fishing nets, individual net elements and fishing net mesh, as well as ways of cutting, fixing joining and setting up fishing nets is given. The methods for the characterization and regular quality control of the final product are described, and the dimensional limitations of fishing gear prescribed by the accession of Croatia to the EU are pointed out.
