Objective evaluation of the quality of enzyme-treated denim fabrics

Abstract

Today, in the era of advanced technologies, the traditional evaluation of certain types of textile materials and their usability, i.e. suitability for a particular purpose becomes a thing of the past. The modem concept of quality is incorporated in the new approach to quality in the center of which is the user, so it is not surprising that in recent decades research has been intensified in the field of objective evaluation (especially handle) and a complex evaluation of fabric quality. Although traditional denim fabric has been present on the market and known in the clothing industry for ages, it is influenced by fashion trends and is increasingly modified using various finishing procedures (bleaching, stone washing, etc), thus changing its original shape, and the concept of quality by consumers. With respect to the more frequent and favored use of enzymes in finishing processes, this paper investigates the quality and possibility of objective evaluation of the handle of enzyme treated denim fabrics from the group of a amylases and cellulases. Performed enzymatic desizing and washing of denim fabrics generally improve the overall value of handle (THV), i.e. flexibility and handle of the material, although in the case of repeated washing they can lead to unwanted consequences such as changes of colour, durability and stability of 3D shapes.
