Abstract

Cotton fibres used for sanitary products were bleached with equilibrium peracetic acid (PAA). Alkaline scoured fibres and nonscoured fibres were bleached at 23, 40, 60 and 80 °C during 10 to 80 minutes in neutral initial bath with the bath ratio 1:20. Optimal bleaching conditions were determined by measuring the CIE whiteness values, water absorbency, DP and by wax and ash content on the fibres after bleaching. Bleaching with PAA at 60 °C 40 minutes after alkaline scouring gives fibres that comply with pharmacological prescriptions. The damage on fibres bleached at these conditions is minimal.
