Abstract

Although! Croatian textile and garment industry is an esteemed partner to European and world customers, it has been faced with a number of difficulties. Some of the problems, such as the loss of traditional markets, have been caused by the war, but most of them are inherited (old fashioned equipment and technology, low efficiency, too narrow or too broad range of products, underdeveloped marketing). These industries have solvency always had strong foreign trade relations, but these results have been deteriorating since 1994. According to some forecastings, the number of employees, overall production and export balance will continue to deteriorate for some time in the future. Clear strategy on the part of the state is necessary, as well as the production, with reduced number of employees, development, of brand names and an altered marketing presentation of own products, finding out the possibilities for modernisation of production technique and technology. Due to a significant number of skilled personnel in these industry, the prerequisites for solving the problems and for a positive further development are given.
