Abstract

Treatment of textiles against flammability has great importance in the modern finishing, particularly of cellulosic fibres fabrics. In this study, the importance of this treatment, from the point of view of prevention of fatal fibres is pointed out. A special section is devoted to the chemistry of thermal cellulose decomposition and to the analysis of characteristic temperature of decomposition. The burning mechanism and mechanism of cellulose pyrolysis and their prevention is presented. By means of several theories the action of retardants is explained. Phosphorous compounds as notable and effective flammability retardants are described. Technological aspects of treatment, test methods and standards, as well as the extension of flammability are presented.
